Police Charge Second Person in Connection with Sunday's Double Shooting and Homicide in Parkway East Apartments; Police Not Searching for Any Other Suspects

Jackson police have arrested a second man in connection with a double shooting in Parkway East Apartments on Sunday that left one teen dead and another man seriously injured. Police are not searching for any other suspects.

Investigators developed Jakeil Waller, 21, of Jackson, as a person of interest. Officers took Waller into custody for questioning around 9 p.m. Tuesday in Jackson.

Today, investigators filed charges on Waller for the first-degree murder of Shomari Peterson, 17, and attempted first-degree murder of a 21-year-old man. Waller remains in custody at the Madison County Jail and is scheduled to be arraigned via video link at 8 a.m. Friday in Jackson City Court.

At approximately 5:07 p.m. Sunday, police were called about two people shot outside Parkway East Apartments at 33 Carver Avenue. Peterson and the 21-year-old man, both of Jackson, had been shot. Peterson died from his injuries.

The investigation determined that Waller and a 17-year-old male suspect both shot into a crowd of people striking Peterson and the 21-year-old man.

The 21-year-old man remains at Jackson-Madison County General Hospital in stable condition. Police are not identifying him for safety concerns.

The 17-year-old male suspect was also charged with first-degree murder and attempted first-degree murder. Police arrested the teen around 8:30 p.m. Monday in Jackson. Following a detention hearing on Tuesday in Madison County Juvenile Court, Judge Christy Little ordered that the teen be held pending a transfer hearing.

District Attorney General Jerry Woodall had indicated his office will file a motion to have the teen tried as an adult.
