Escaped inmates captured overnight in Gordon County, Ga.; being held as fugitives
Two inmates who escaped custody from Avery County authorities Tuesday afternoon are back in custody in Gordon County, Ga.
Calvin Lee Metcalf, 20, of Bakersville, and Phillip Nicholas Metcalf, 25, of Spruce Pine, were being held in the McDowell County jail on Mitchell County charges. As part of a break-in investigation, Avery deputies got the pair from McDowell Tuesday and transported them to Avery.
At approximately 4 p.m., the Metcalfs overpowered an Avery County detective, stole his service vehicle and weapons and fled.
Authorities across North Carolina and surrounding states joined in the search, and the inmates were captured in Georgia overnight.
They are currently being held as fugitives in the Gordon County, Ga. jail.
