Distracted Driving Causes Head-On Crash

Parke County—At 2:30 this afternoon, Indiana State Police and Parke County emergency agencies responded to a two-vehicle crash on US 41 approximately one mile north of State Road 163 (Lyford). The head-on crash injured three, one critically.

Preliminary investigation revealed a red 1997 Ford F-250, driven by 21-year-old Holly R. Alward of Marshall, IN., was southbound on US 41 and crossed the double yellow center line striking a northbound maroon 1998 Chevrolet 1500, driven by 44-year-old Steven Bundy of Rockville, IN. Bundy was entrapped in the vehicle for nearly 25 minutes before being extricated by members of the Lyford Fire/Rescue and Clinton City Fire/Rescue Departments. Bundy was transported to Union Hospital of Clinton by Parke County EMS and later airlifted to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis by IU Health air ambulance. Bundy is believed to have suffered multiple fractures and internal injuries with his injuries considered life-threatening. Bundy was wearing a seatbelt.

Holly Alward and her 22-year-old passenger Joseph Alward suffered what appeared to be minor injuries and refused treatment at the scene. They were allegedly wearing restraints.

During their investigation, troopers discovered information which led them to believe Holly Alward was distracted by a cell phone and crossed the center line striking the Bundy vehicle head-on.

Drugs and/or alcohol are not suspected at this time. Alward was cited for driving left of center.

The crash was investigated by ISP Trooper Michael Organ and Kyle Hall. Assisting were multiple ISP Troopers, Parke County Sheriff’s Office, Vermillion County Sheriff’s Office, Lyford Fire/Rescue, Clinton City Fire/Rescue, Mecca Fire Department, Parke County EMS, and IU Health Air Ambulance.

Under the Law, criminal charges are merely accusations and the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
