SPD Explorer Post start first of several courtesy vehicle checks. Would your vehicle receive a passing grade?

On 7-21-14, the Sheboygan Law Enforcement Explorer Post assisted the Sheboygan Police Department and conducted the first of several planned Courtesy Vehicle Checks. Ultimately, 154 vehicles were inspected with 90 receiving a “Passing” grade and 54 receiving a “Failing” grade. All vehicles were inspected from a position that anyone, standing in a public space, could view the “failures.” Many vehicles failed for several reasons including;
OPEN WINDOWS (15)
UNLOCKED DOORS (32)
KEYS IN VEHICLE OR IGNITION (4)
VALUABLES IN PLAIN VIEW (26)
TOOLS IN PLAIN VIEW/EASY ACCESS (4)
COINS IN PLAIN VIEW (2)

Numerous contacts were made with local residents during our efforts to reduce victimization. We appreciate the chance to meet the residents, share information, discuss problems and build relationships that may lead to safer neighborhoods. Again, we are reminding and asking citizens for your participation in our efforts to reduce prospective theft from auto crimes. Please, close your windows, lock your vehicles and do not leave any valuables in plain view.
