Garage Fire Displaces Family and Pets

Vehicle Fire in Garage Displaces Residents and Their Animals

Maricopa, AZ. (July 18, 2014) At approximately 6:45 pm, City of Maricopa Fire Department crews along with Sun Lakes Fire Department, responded to a “vehicle fire with exposures” in the 45000 block of West Rhea Rd. As crews arrived on scene they found a working vehicle fire in an open garage with bystanders spraying water with a garden hose.

As crews were attempting to knock down the fire, a resident continually attempted to run back into the home for his animals. Due to this life safety issue a delay was caused in the beginning stages of the fire attack. For his safety, the resident was lead away from the home and fire personnel were assigned to assist in the needs of the occupant. The fire was then quickly contained in the garage as additional fire crews searched the house and rescued two cats inside. The Sun Lakes Fire Department’s Crisis Response unit assisted the residents with alternative lodging for the night.

There were no injuries to the firefighters, residents, or animals on scene. There was obvious smoke and fire damage to the garage and vehicles, although due to the quick actions of the crews there was minimal damage to the interior living space of the home. The cause of the fire is still under investigation but is believed to have started in a vehicle in the garage.

The City of Maricopa Fire Department strongly urges all residents to immediately leave a house that is on fire and stay out. Re-entering a burning structure not only puts more lives at risk, it increases the danger to the firefighters as well. All residents should have an emergency escape plan for their homes. This plan can include the animals at the house, but never delay an escape due to your animals. It is best to alert the crews arriving on scene.
