Malibu/Lost Hills Sheriff's Station Safety Tip- How to Protect Your Child From Online Predators
TITLE: How to Protect Your Child From Online Predators
Narrative:
With social media surging and online interactions expanding, the children of this generation are almost sure to have at least some internet contact on a daily basis. The ability to immediately access information makes it important for parents to familiarize themselves with what the internet is capable of bringing into the home, and how to protect your children from some of the dangers. Unfortunately, the same advances in computer and telecommunication technology that allow our children to reach out to new sources of knowledge and cultural experiences are also leaving them vulnerable to exploitation and harm by computer-sex offenders.
We have provided a guide below for parents to follow to help ensure their children do not fall victim to online predators and other risks.
SIGNS YOUR CHILD MAY BE A VICTIM OF AN ONLINE PREDATOR
*Your child spends large amounts of time online, especially at night.
* You find pornography on your child's computer.
* Your child receives phone calls from someone you don't know
*Your child quickly changes the screen when you walk in to room
WHAT YOU CAN DO TO MINIMIZE CHANCES YOUR CHILD BECOMES A VICTIM
* Talk with your child about the dangers of computer-sex offenders
* Monitor your child's access to all types of electronic communications.
* Keep the computer in a common room in the house, not the bedroom.
* Always maintain access to your child's on-line accounts.
* Instruct your children to:
- never arrange a meeting with someone they met on-line
- never upload pictures of themselves onto the Internet
- never give out identifying info such as their name, home address, etc.
As with anything, the Malibu/Lost Hills Sheriff's Station suggests that you trust your instincts. If you feel that something is not right or that your child may be a victim of an on line predator, CALL THE POLICE.
