The Albany Police Department would like to remind the members of our community about the following safety tips:

- There is safety in numbers. If possible, don't walk alone, especially during late-night hours. Walk in groups whenever you can.

- Walk in well-lit areas as much as possible. Avoid alleys, vacant lots, wooded areas, and other short-cuts or secluded areas. These areas are usually not well-lit and may make you an easier target for a robbery.

- Walk confidently, directly, and at a steady pace. Don't stop to talk to strangers.

- If you’re wearing headphones, set the volume at a level where you will be able to hear outside noise and things that may be happening around you.

- Avoid talking or texting on your mobile phone while walking on the street. Using your phone on the street makes it easy for a thief to steal your phone and potentially other property.

- Always carry purses or handbags close to your body. Carrying items loosely makes it easy for a thief to take these items away from you.

- Avoid carrying large sums of cash, or displaying expensive jewelry in public. Displaying valuables or money may tempt a thief to steal your items

- Always be aware of your surroundings and report any suspicious persons or activity to the Albany Police Department by calling (518) 438-4000.
