Prescribed burn in Hays Co.

The Austin Water Utility’s Wildland Conservation Division plans to conduct a prescribed burn today (Monday, July 14th) on just over 380 acres of the Water Quality Protection Lands if weather conditions are appropriate.

How: Austin Water’s Wildland Conservation Division in cooperation with the Austin Fire Department, local Emergency Service Districts, the Texas A&M Forest Service, and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service will manage the prescribed burn to ensure it is carried out safely

Why: Prescribed burns are a land-management tool used by Austin Water’s Wildland Conservation Division to decrease the density of brush and encourage growth of native grasses which improves the quality and quantity of water recharging the Barton Springs segment of the Edward’s Aquifer. Prescribed burns safely mimic the natural fire cycle and maintain fire-resilient landscapes for the benefit of people, water, and wildlife. Visit for more information.

Where: Smoke may be visible west of Buda, east of FM 1826 and north of FM 967 from mid-morning to sunset. Because this prescribed burn will produce smoke in the area the public should be aware of this controlled event and use discretion when contacting emergency services.
