*3rd Update* #LASD Search is Over: Missing Abalone Cove Swimmer Found/Identified, Rancho Palos Verdes

The search for Joseph Anthony Sanchez, the male adult who went missing after swimming with friends at Abalone Cove, Rancho Palos Verdes, on Wednesday, July 9th, 2014, has ended.

At approximately 11:43am this morning, a Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department (LASD) deputy from Lomita Sheriff’s Station, who was patrolling the surrounding area, directed his attention to a commotion amongst a group of people along the shoreline. Upon contacting the group, the deputy quickly learned of what appeared to be a human body floating in the water in the area of Abalone Cove.

Los Angeles County Lifeguards quickly responded, recovered the human body from the water, and contacted LASD Emergency Services Detail (ESD) personnel, who took possession of the body.

Upon the arrival of LASD Homicide detectives and the Los Angeles County Department of Coroner, at approximately 3:00pm positive identification of the body was made and notification to the family of Joseph Anthony Sanchez, a resident of Long Beach, was made.

The body of Joseph Anthony Sanchez was recovered approximately 50 yards from where he originally went missing.

Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department dive team have concluded their search for the missing swimmer for the day. Their search will resume tomorrow morning, pending water conditions.

Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Special Enforcement Bureau (SEB) and Emergency Services Detail (ESD) divers are continuing their search for the man who went missing after swimming with his friends at Abalone Cove, Rancho Palos Verdes.

SEB and ESD divers dove for approximately eight hours today in search of the missing swimmer but was unable to locate him.

This evening, Sheriff's boats and a helipcopter will be on scene to continue looking for the swimmer in the coastal region along Abalone Cove.

SEB and ESD divers will resume their search tomorrow morning, pending water conditions.

There is no other information at this time.

UNIT: LASD Special Enforcement Bureau & Emergency Services Detail


Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department (LASD) Special Enforcement Bureau (SEB) responded to Abalone Cove at Inspiration Point, Rancho Palos Verdes, to search for a male adult who went missing during a swim with friends.

After an extensive, yet unsuccessful effort by the Los Angeles County Fire Department (LACoFD) to locate and rescue the distressed swimmer, SEB and LASD Emergency Services Detail divers responded at approximately 6 p.m. to take over the search efforts.

The search is still active at this time.

There is no additional information at this time.
