Mountain lion threatens Rancho Cucamonga neighborhood

INCIDENT: Mountain Lion in Rancho Cucamonga neighborhood
LOCATION: 8800 block of Somerset Drive & 6300 block of Moonstone Ave., Rancho Cucamonga
SUMMARY:
On July 12, 2014, at approximately 6:44 a.m., deputies from the Rancho Cucamonga Police Department responded to a report of two mountain lions jumping from back yard to back yard in the 8800 block of Somerset Drive. This urban residential area is close to Beryl Park and the 210 Freeway. Deputies searched the area and saw a mountain lion scale a fence and bound through several backyards. The deputies requested the assistance of Rancho Cucamonga Animal Control and the California Department of Fish and Wildlife.
The deputies warned residents to stay indoors while they searched the neighborhood. At 7:25 a.m., a homeowner in the 6300 block of Moonstone Avenue reported a mountain lion was in the backyard of the residence. Deputies and animal control officers responded and located an adult mountain lion in a corner of the yard. The responding public safety personnel maintained a respectful and non-threatening distance to observe and assess the animal.
Based on the imminent threat to public safety; at 8:19 a.m., a deputy humanely shot the mountain lion. The animal expired of the single gunshot wound immediately and a Necropsy will be conducted.
The Rancho Cucamonga Police Department would like to alert area residents of recent mountain lion sightings in residential areas along the foothills. Mountain lions are nocturnal animals who hunt at night. Residents are encouraged to remain vigilant, keep pets inside and call 9-1-1 if you spot a mountain lion in a residential neighborhood. Residents are being warned to avoid hiking or jogging when mountain lions are most active- dawn, dusk, and at night.
