Pavement Preservation Project Set to Begin
Motorists should reduce their speed and use caution throughout the project limits

CYNTHIANA, Ind. – Later this month the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) plans to begin a pavement preservation project on State Road 65 and State Road 68 in Gibson and Vanderburgh counties.
Beginning on or after Monday, June 23, INDOT maintenance crews will begin a seal coating process on S.R. 68 from S.R. 165 in Poseyville to the junction of S.R. 65 in Cynthiana. It is estimated that work on this roadway will be complete by the end of the day on Monday, June 30, weather, material and equipment permitting.
Once crews complete the work on S.R. 68, work will then move to S.R. 65 from the junction of S.R. 165 in Owensville to the junction of S.R. 66 on the northwest side of Evansville. Crews will begin their day at approximately 7:00 a.m. local time and be complete by 5:00 p.m. each day and it is estimated this work will be complete by Friday, July 18, weather, material and equipment permitting.

The seal coating process includes the distribution of a liquid asphalt emulsion on the roadway and covering the liquid asphalt with crushed stone to provide a new wearing surface. Crews then broom off the excess stone and follow up with the clear coat fog sealing process. By applying this seal coat it will extend the life of a roadway by protecting it from moisture, ultra-violet degradation and any other exposures that could damage a roadway. Of the pavement preservation methods employed by the state, this process is perhaps the most cost effective. Studies show that every $1 invested it saves $10 in future road repairs.

Drivers should reduce their speed and exercise caution during the projects. Loose stone will be present on the roadway during the initial cure of the asphalt and can damage windshields and paint on vehicles if speeding or following too closely. It is recommended when travelling on a sealed road to slow down and allow additional space between vehicles.

INDOT reminds motorists to follow the posted work zone speed limit, use caution and consider worker safety when traveling through a work zone. For the latest news and information about INDOT, please visit www.in.gov/indot.
