Possible Bomb Scare Turns Out To Be Nothing

Brookston-Today at approximately 6:30 p.m, the Indiana State Police at Lafayette received a phone call from a concerned citizen in Brookston on what appeared to be a pipe bomb in the middle of the street.

Troopers from the Lafayette Post arrived at the scene and closed down the area of Third Street (that is St Rd 18 through Brookston) and High Street until units from the Indiana State Police Explosive Ordinance Disposal (E.O.D.) arrived at the scene. Master Troopers Chris Hager, Rick Hudson and Trooper Kyle Herron of the E.O.D. team checked the item and rendered it safe for disposal. After further investigation, the alleged pipe bomb turned out to be a container that holds a registration for a semi truck.

“It must have fallen off of a passing semi and from a distance it could appear to be a pipe bomb” explains Master Trooper Hager. “We would rather the public call if they have any doubt about what they have found. We would rather show up and find something like this than have someone try and dispose of it themselves and be hurt or possibly killed.”

St Rd 18 was closed for about one hour for checking and disposing of the device. Assisting at the scene was the Brookston Town Marshal.

Sorry, I have no pictures.
