Preventing Mail Theft

In the past few weeks, the Sausalito Police Department has received three reports of mail theft. Thieves target mail as a means of obtaining checks and personal information. This can lead to fraudulent credit card applications and purchases being made in the victim’s name. Anyone who has had their identity stolen can attest to the frustration and the time it takes to clear their name.
Here is what you can do to protect your mail from thieves:

• Promptly remove mail from your mailbox after delivery, especially if you're expecting checks, credit cards, or other negotiable items. If you won't be home when the items are expected, ask a trusted friend or neighbor to pick up your mail.

• Have your local post office hold your mail while you're on vacation, or absent from your home for a long period of time.

• If you don't receive a check or other valuable mail you're expecting, contact the issuing agency immediately.

• If you change your address, immediately notify your post office and anyone with whom you do business via the mail.

• Always deposit your important mail (credit card applications, payments, etc.) in a mail slot at your local post office, or hand it directly to your letter carrier.

• Consider on-line banking and bill payment.

If you believe that your mail has been stolen, please contact the Sausalito Police Department at 415-289-4170. In addition, you can file an on-line report with the USPS at: https://postalinspectors.uspis.gov/investigations/MailFraud/

If you see anyone suspicious looking through mailboxes, day or night, please contact the police department without delay. Report anything suspicious, such as multiple mailboxes left open or abandoned mail found on the roadside.
