Crawford County: A Louisville, Kentucky man escaped serious injury this morning when his vehicle struck a stationary Indiana Department of Transportation vehicle.
At approximately 10:48 A.M., Demetrius D. Arthur, 25, Louisville, KY, was traveling westbound on Interstate 64 near the 87 mile marker when his cell phone rang. As Arthur reached to retrieve the phone, he failed to observe a stationary INDOT vehicle with a 20 foot crash attenuator with an active arrow board stopped in the driving lane. Arthur struck the crash attenuator with his 2007 Ford van and came to rest 85 feet from the point of impact, along the guardrail on the south side of the roadway.
Arthur’s vehicle sustained significant damage to the front and passenger side; the vehicle is considered a total loss. He had a complaint of pain to his right arm and was transported to Harrison County Hospital for evaluation. INDOT officials estimated damage to their trailer and truck to be nearly $30,000. The INDOT vehicle was unattended at the time of the crash. Arthur was cited for failing to yield to a stationary recovery vehicle. Interstate 64 was closed at the 87 mile marker for nearly an hour while Troopers investigated the crash and recovery services removed the vehicles.
Distracted driving continues to lead to crashes across Indiana highways. A driver’s primary focus while behind the wheel should be on driving and concentrating on the roadway and surroundings.
