Advisory

Investigators warn McDowell residents to steer clear of telephone scams circulating in the area

Detectives are advising local folks to be aware of two telephone scams circulating the county again.
In one, a caller tells citizens a family member has been arrested and needs money to get out of jail.
Capt. Shanon Smith of the Sheriff’s Office advised McDowell folks never to send money in these instances but to call the relative and confirm whether or not they need help. He said people should find a way to corroborate the story instead of sending money blindly. If you can’t get in touch with the relative, call the jail where they are supposedly confined, Smith urged.
In the other scam, a caller advises residents that they’ve won the Publisher’s Clearing House Sweepstakes and they need to buy a gift card from CVS and send it to a certain address in order to claim their prize.
Local citizens need to be aware of such cons and not fall prey to them.
