On June 24, 2014 at approximately 1840 hours the Burlington Police Department received a report that an individual had contacted a local business claiming to be Green Mountain Power (GMP) Company and requesting a credit card number as the account was overdue. The business was able to identify that the call was a fraud as they do not use GMP. They contacted GMP and GMP verified they have had on going issues regarding the fraudulent phone calls.
The Burlington Police Department wants to remind the community to be vigilant when providing identifying or financial information via the telephone or internet when someone requests that information. Verify that the company is in fact who they state they are before providing this information.
