DUI Round-Up, 34 Arrests in May 2014
In May 2014 officers from the Santa Barbara Police Department made 34 arrests for driving under the influence violations. Numerous arrests are made each month when concerned citizens call 9-1-1 after witnessing possible DUI drivers. The SBPD would like to thank the responsible citizens who take the time to call and report suspected drunk drivers. The following is information on a few of last month’s cases.
5/2/14 at 10:38 p.m.: Amy Louise Snyder (age 38) was involved in a traffic collision on Meigs Road and attempted to flee, however her vehicle was disabled due to the collision and only able to travel a short distance. Several witnesses observed the collision and told Snyder to stay at the scene; one even got into his vehicle and followed Snyder until police could arrive. Officer Peterson was first to contact Snyder and then turned the investigation over to Drinking Driver Team Officer Denbrook. Officer Denbrook conducted a DUI investigation on Snyder who stated that she had consumed one glass of red wine earlier in the evening. Based on her symptomology, Officer Denbrook was concerned that Snyder was too intoxicated to safely operate a motor vehicle. Snyder was ultimately placed under arrest for DUI. Snyder submitted to a blood test which registered her BAC at .27. Snyder was booked into County Jail for DUI and hit-and-run.
5/9/14 at 9:29 p.m.: Jasper Jade Zanoni Jones (age 40) was the subject of multiple 9-1-1 calls due to his reckless and erratic driving. Witnesses told 9-1-1 operators that Jones had driven onto a sidewalk and almost collided with pedestrians on 400 W. Mission Street. Drinking Driver Team Officer Denbrook was dispatched and was advised prior to his arrival that Jones had stopped at a light, been detained, and had his keys taken away by a concerned citizen that witnessed his driving. Officer Denbrook arrived on scene and was advised that Jones had collided with a parked car on 100 W. Mission Street. Officer Denbrook contacted Jones and immediately noticed that Jones appeared very intoxicated; he was slurring his speech, had bloodshot watery eyes, and was having trouble maintaining his balance while in a seated position. Officer Denbrook conducted a DUI investigation on Jones who stated that he had consumed three pints of IPA prior to driving. Officer Denbrook determined that Jones was far too intoxicated to safely operate a motor vehicle and placed him under arrest for DUI. Jones chose to submit to a blood test which registered his BAC at .28. Jones was booked into County Jail for DUI.
5/10/14 at 6:04 a.m.: Zuyi Huang (age 24) was the subject of a 9-1-1 call when he was found passed out in his vehicle in the middle of the roadway on 800 W. Pedregosa Street. Officer Corral arrived and found Huang was passed out in his vehicle with the engine running. Officer Corral opened the car door, turned off the vehicle, and removed the keys. Officer Corral then woke Huang who immediately attempted to start the car several times, not realizing that there were no keys in the ignition. Huang appeared very intoxicated and Officer Corral conducted a DUI investigation. Huang was eventually placed under arrest for DUI and he chose submit to a breath test which registered his BAC at .20 and .18. Huang was issued a citation for DUI and admitted into the Sobering Center.
5/11/14 at 6:20 p.m.: Dora Guadalupe Gusman (age 56) was involved in a hit-and-run collision on the 100 block of Santa Rosa Place. Gusman collided with another car and then drove away, prompting the victim to follow her and call 9-1-1. Officer Ford arrived and contacted Gusman who stated that she hadn’t realized she was in a collision. Officer Ford observed signs of alcohol intoxication and conducted a DUI investigation on Gusman. Gusman said she had consumed two 7-Up and vodka drinks prior to driving. Officer Ford determined that Gusman was too intoxicated to safely operate a motor vehicle and placed her under arrest for DUI. Gusman chose to submit to a breath test which registered her BAC at .18 and .18. Gusman was issued a citation for DUI and admitted into the Sobering Center.
5/20/14 at 7:45 p.m.: Gregory Christopher Gomez (age 28) was involved in an injury traffic collision when he failed to stop for a stop sign and broadsided another vehicle at the intersection of Islay Street and Chapala Street. Gomez was contacted by police and stated that the collision was his fault because he was drunk. He remarked that he hadn’t even drunk an entire pint of vodka. Officer Kamin contacted Gomez at the hospital and interviewed him; he determined that Gomez was intoxicated and that the cause of the collision was Gomez driving under the influence. Gomez was placed under arrest and he submitted to a blood test to determine the alcohol content of his blood; his BAC registered .22. Gomez became agitated and began fighting with hospital personnel; he was eventually booked into County Jail for felony DUI causing injury.
5/24/14 at 7:24 p.m.: Patrick Edward Foley (age 60) was driving on Chapala Street when he entered a DUI checkpoint on the 1900 block. He then backed his vehicle out of the checkpoint and parked alongside the curb when Sergeant Holtke contacted him. Sergeant Holtke immediately noticed that Foley appeared very intoxicated and requested that Officer Beutel respond to evaluate him. Foley initially stated that he had not consumed any alcohol, but later said that he had one beer prior to driving. Officer Beutel conducted a DUI investigation and determined that Foley was too intoxicated to safely drive. Foley was placed under arrest for DUI and he submitted to a breath test which registered his BAC at .22 and .24. Foley was issued a citation for DUI and admitted into the Sobering Center.
5/31/14 at 12:40 a.m.: Richard Omar Gonzalez (age 24) called 9-1-1 to report that an unoccupied vehicle was blocking his driveway, preventing him from entering. Dispatch advised that the caller sounded intoxicated and was honking his car horn. Officers Morton and Melchor responded and observed Gonzalez driving south on the 1400 block of Almond Avenue. Drinking Driver Team Officer Denbrook arrived as Gonzalez was exiting his vehicle and attempting to flag him down. Gonzalez stated that he had been honking his car horn for more than 30 minutes in an attempt to prompt the owner of the vehicle that was blocking his driveway to appear and move his car. Officer Denbrook noticed that at least two neighbors had been roused by Gonzalez and were standing outside of their residences. Officer Denbrook observed that Gonzalez was displaying signs of intoxication and conducted a DUI investigation. Gonzalez stated that he had consumed two and one-half drinks prior to driving. Officer Denbrook determined that Gonzalez was too intoxicated to safely operate a motor vehicle and placed him under arrest. Gonzalez submitted to a breath test and provided three breath samples which registered his BAC at .15, .12, and .13. Gonzalez became agitated and uncooperative, disqualifying himself for admission into the Sobering Center. Gonzalez was booked into County Jail for DUI.
