6/23/2014, press release: Attempted Murder

On June 23 at 9:56 am the Burlington Fire Department ambulance responded to the holding area at the Chittenden Superior Court, Criminal Division for a report of an injured person. Sherriff’s Deputies were already on scene and Burlington Police were not contacted at this time. At approximately 10:30 am, Burlington Police Detectives were contacted directly by the Chittenden County Sheriff’s Department regarding this incident indicating that one detainee had stabbed another detainee with a pen.

Investigation revealed that Chad Brown, who was being transported by Sherriff’s Deputies for arraignment after an incident on Venus Avenue in Burlington yesterday, where he is accused of stabbing a relative, was in a holding cell in the basement of the courthouse. Brown and another male detainee were shackled at the legs and seated at a table in a room designed for them to meet with Attorneys.

Brown took a pen he was using to fill out paperwork, lunged at the other man, and drove the pen into the side of the man’s neck. Brown continued to attack the man for a few seconds until the man picked up a chair to defend himself and Deputies entered the room.

Brown was subsequently arraigned and held for an Emergency Evaluation on the charge from June 22nd. It is anticipated that he will be arraigned on a charge of attempted murder for this attack tomorrow.

The victim was transported to Fletcher Allen, treated and released as the injury missed vital arteries and veins by 1.5 to 2 centimeters.

More detail will be available tomorrow in the affidavit of probable cause filed with the Court.
