I-69 Construction Zone Crash Claims One Life
Last night around 11:20 p.m. a north bound semi that failed to slow down for slowed traffic entering a construction zone on I-69 caused a chain reaction crash that claimed one life and involved four vehicles.
Troopers, who were at the rear of the construction zone trying to slow down traffic entering the zone, said the initial vehicle that was struck in the rear by the semi burst into flames after being pushed forward into a third vehicle, a pickup truck. The driver of the initial vehicle hit by the semi was killed and the vehicle was destroyed in the fire.
The third vehicle struck was then pushed forward into a fourth vehicle, also a pickup truck. The driver of the semi, a 2007 Kenworth, was Kim D. McCall, age 58 of St. Ann Mo. and he was not injured. The driver of the third vehicle, a 2013 Ford pickup was Brad Schlachter, age 33 of Findlay Ohio. He also was uninjured.
The fourth vehicle, a 2011 Chevrolet pickup, was driven by Frederick Mills, age 51 of Muncie. He was also uninjured. Traffic was routed off of I-69 at the 222 exit until shortly before 5 a.m. while investigators worked at the scene. The identity of the deceased driver will be released later after notifications of family have been made.
Troopers were assisted at the scene by Madison County EMS and EMA, Madison County Sheriff's Department and Anderson Fire Department. Trooper Jason Girt was treated and released at St. John's Hospital in Anderson for smoke inhalation.
