Updated Message: Tips on How to Make your Home Safe While You are Away (Edit: Do not shut off gas while away according to So Cal. Gas Co.)

Summer is here and most families will be taking summer vacations.  While on vacation you need to make sure your home is protected while you are away.

The following are some precautions that can be taken:

Stop your mail and newspaper delivery. If your mailbox is full while you are away, criminals will be alerted that you aren't home. If you don't have a friend who will be bringing in your mail, contact the post office and newspaper to temporarily suspend delivery.

Have your lawn cut.  Make arrangements to have your lawn cut and maintained to give the home a lived-in look.

Don’t make posts about your vacation on social media.  You don't need to broadcast to everyone (especially on sites like Facebook) that you are going to be away. You never know who is going to be reading or listening.

Use Timers.   Set up an electrical timer to turn lights and TVs on at various time to fool potential intruders into thinking you are at home. Set the timer to reflect your normal routine.

Consider shutting off water. If you are going to be gone an extended period of time, consider shutting off your water to avoid potential flooding in the event of a leak.

Notify Neighbors.  Let a few trusted neighbors know that you are leaving on vacation.  They can watch your residence while you are away.

Use TPD’s Vacation Security Check.   While you are away on vacation, officers from the Torrance Police Department will periodically stop by your home to check for open doors, broken windows or any other suspicious circumstances. This is another added security precaution you can utilize to safeguard your possessions and assure your peace of mind while you are on vacation.  Go to the following link to fill out a vacation security check:
