State Police and Better Business Bureau Warn About IRS Scam

(Fort Wayne, IN)-The Indiana State Police in Fort Wayne and the Better Business Bureau (BBB) of Northern Indiana are teaming up to remind citizens of the scam circulating in which callers purport to be with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).

According to the BBB, consumers are receiving very menacing calls from individuals, who state that they are with the IRS. The reason stated for their call is that they’re collecting on taxes owed since 2002. Threats of arrest and jail time are made, if immediate payment isn’t given.

These calls are very intimidating. Being arrested, thrown in jail, and owing lots of money are sure to shake people up, and people instinctively pull out their wallets to make the threats go away. Please be assured that these calls are not legitimate.

The IRS would not operate in this manner and laws have created by the Federal Trade Commission that prohibits making these kinds of threats. If an individual truly owed money in back taxes, the IRS would send out notifications via mail. For concerns regarding these calls, the IRS can be reached at 800-829-1049.
