Man Arrested for SAM After Inappropriately Touching Juvenile in Local Retail Store

Case: 14-22416

On June 3, 2014 after 10:00 a.m. Anchorage Police responded to a suspicious circumstance regarding a male who was reported to have inappropriately touched a juvenile girl at a retail store located at 1231 E Dimond Boulevard. The female juvenile told her mother that an older male inside the store had touched her genitalia. Police responded to investigate the incident, and identified the male suspect as 59-year-old Carl Teeluk. Teeluk had left the store prior to police arrival but returned to the store a couple of hours later. A store employee called police when Teeluk returned to the store the second time and followed Teeluk on foot until police were able to make contact with him near Abbott Road and Erin Street. After conducting a preliminary police investigation of the incident, Teeluk was arrested and charged with one count of Sexual Abuse of a Minor. Police believe there could potentially be other victims of Teeluk and anyone with information is asked to call Police at 786-8900.

Anchorage police would like to highlight two important elements in this case: that the juvenile communicated with her parent that something wrong had happened to her and that the store employee took action by calling police after being made aware of the situation.

“It’s important for parents to start early with conversations with their children regarding appropriate behavior,” said Detective Sgt. Cindi Stanton with APD’s Crimes Against Children Unit. “It’s especially important to make sure that children understand that they can tell their parents anything and that their parents will believe them.”

Note: A criminal charge is merely an accusation of criminal wrongdoing. All persons charged with crimes are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty by a court of law
