The Green Bay Police Department is making the community aware of continued phone scam attempts.

Green Bay Police have been receiving multiple reports from residents of a scam that is circulating. The caller claims they are from the Brown County Sheriff’s Office or the Green Bay Police Department and the person receiving a call has warrants for their arrest. The caller says that they need to pay using a prepaid debit card or they will be arrested. The caller even gives them a name and a badge number, as well as citation numbers.

The Green Bay Police Department does not call if you have warrants or fail to show for court. Also, prepaid debit cards are NOT accepted as payment for warrants or citations.

Another recent scam is that the caller is purporting to be a representative with the Green Bay Police department and is soliciting funds to support local police. The caller will ask you to but a prepaid card, something like a "green dot card" and then call them back once you have the card and read off the numbers to them. The caller then uses these numbers for their own gain and none of the funds reach the police or were even meant for them.

There are legitamate solicitors that work on behalf of the the Green Bay Police Benevolent or Fraternal Order of Police but these reputable companies won't ask for credit cards, or pre-paid cards, or cash. They may ask for donations but will send you a mailer if you wish to donate and then the check or money order you send will be made out specifically to the Green Bay Police Benevolent or Fraternal Order of Police. The mailers will also go to a local address, which is another component of its validity.

If you have any concerns regarding a citation or warrant, contact Green Bay Municipal Court at (920) 448-3131 or the appropriate municipality. If you were solicited to buy a pre-paid card to support the police or other entity, that most likely was a scam as well. Please contact our department with any concerns, (920) 448-3200.
