Scammers are emailing and faxing fake arrest warrants to people across the country, including in central and southern Ohio, federal officials warned yesterday.

The “warrants” typically ask recipients to call a number to receive a settlement, or to wire money to avoid arrest, according to a news release. The bogus warrants might include court-case numbers, authoritative-looking logos and charges such as money laundering, bank fraud or missed jury duty, the release said.

Authentic warrants are served in person by law-enforcement officers.

Anyone who receives a fake warrant is asked to contact the FBI or the U.S. Marshals Service. Questions about a warrant’s validity can be directed to the Vinton County Sheriffs Office at 740-596-5242.
