Armed Suspect Fires at State Police Officers

Indianapolis, IN – Shortly before midnight of Thursday, May 29, 2014 two uniformed state police officers, driving an unmarked state police Chevrolet Tahoe, were shot at by a suspect armed with a rifle as he leaned out the passenger side window of a White 2002 Cadillac DTS. This occurred just inside the entrance drive of Lakeview Apartments in the area of 21st Street and Mitthoeffer. Neither officer was struck by the gunfire.

Officers from the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department and the Indiana State Police had previously responded, earlier in the evening, to the report of gunshots, possibly coming from a white 4 door vehicle, within the Lakeview Apartment complex. While no suspects were located as a result of the first complaint, there was a second report of gunfire coming from the same apartment complex. It was at this time the state police officers in the unmarked Tahoe saw a 2002 White 4-door Cadillac driving in the apartment complex in a suspicious manner, turning in and out of drives. When the unmarked state police vehicle was behind the Cadillac the driver accelerated rapidly toward the exit. The police vehicle was following the Cadillac, but had not activated any emergency equipment. At this time the Cadillac slowed and the passenger leaned out the window of the moving car and fired multiple rifle shots at the state police vehicle.

The Cadillac then sped out of the apartment complex, headed North on Mitthoeffer Road, with the state police officers in pursuit, now with all emergency lights and siren activated. As the driver of the Cadillac approached the intersection of 30th & Mitthoeffer, he lost control of the car and struck a guardrail on the northeast corner of the intersection. The crash disabled the Cadillac and the driver and passenger abandoned the car and fled on foot.

With the assistance of IMPD, the Lawrence Police Department and additional state police officers, a perimeter was established about eight blocks in each direction from the intersection of 30th & Mitthoeffer. Within 45 minutes, a person of interest was detained and as of the writing of this news release this person had not been arrested.

The perimeter was released shortly before 4:00 a.m. the morning of Friday, May 30th.

The only description available on the two suspects was that both were male blacks, in their late teens to early twenties, and both were reported to be wearing dark clothes.

State police crime scene investigators had the Cadillac impounded and brought to the Indianapolis State Police Post at 21st and Post Road. The vehicle will be processed for evidence once a search warrant is obtained.

No weapons have been recovered and it is possible the rifle may have been abandoned in a field or yard once the suspects ran from the Cadillac. Anyone seeing what appears to be an abandoned rifle should not handle it in any manner, but should call 911 to report their finding.

Anyone with information about either suspect should call the Indiana State Police at 800-582-8440, or call Crime Stoppers at 262-TIPS (8477).

The investigation is continuing with resources from the Indiana State Police and the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department.

Any further developments will result in an updated release.

No further information is available at this time.
