Newark Police Conduct Pedestrian Safety Operation

Pedestrian Safety Operation

During morning commute hours on Tuesday May 20th, 2014, Officers from the Newark Police Department conducted a Pedestrian Safety Operation. The Pedestrian Safety Operation was an effort focused on pedestrian safety due to several recent pedestrian related vehicle collisions, and the upcoming summer break for our local schools. During this operation, non-uniformed members of the Newark Police Department crossed streets in marked pedestrian crosswalks while officers monitored drivers’ compliance. The Pedestrian Safety Operation resulted in the issuance of 50 citations, which includes 35 pedestrian right-of-way violations, 2 unlicensed drivers’ violations, 14 other vehicle code violations, and 21 verbal warnings.

Officers who participated in the Pedestrian Safety Operation used this opportunity to speak with motorists, along with educating drivers regarding pedestrian right-of-ways and other associated traffic laws.
