Semi Crash Has Claimed One Life

Fountain County-Today at approximately 5:25 p.m. on I-74 eastbound near the 21.5 mile marker (that is approximately six miles east of US 41 exit), a semi crashed into a bridge support killing the driver.

Preliminary investigation by Trooper Kyle Wentland has revealed that a purple 2007 Peterbuilt owned by Seward Motor Freight out of Seward NE was pulling a 2012 Great Dane trailer full of cat food. The rig was driven by Dale C. Johnstone Jr, 42 from Canton, OH. For an unknown reason, the semi left the roadway entering the median and struck the bridge support to SR 341 killing the driver. Indiana Department of Transportation bridge inspectors are on scene and have deemed the bridge safe for travel. The Peterbuilt was a total loss and cat food from the trailer is strewn all over both east and west bound lanes of I-74.

It is unknown at this time how long it will take for .the investigation, cleanup and removal of the semi. I-74 is still closed between the SR 25 and US 41 exits. Continue to use the detour until further notice. The name of the driver will be released when family has been notified.

Assisting at the scene was Trooper Nathan Hampton, Fountain County Sheriff’s Department, Fountain County Coroner’s Office, the Waynetown, Hillsboro and Veedersburg Fire Departments and INDOT.

Media note: A correction on the location in the first paragraph has been made from the original release.
