Education of Home Repair Fraud & other scams that tend to appear in warmer months.
The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office reminds residents of common home repair fraud that tends to occur during the spring and summer months. Proactive education and awareness help to prevent becoming a victim yourself and those you care for.
Warmer weather tends to bring home repair fraud into our community. Often senior citizens are targeted by those that commit these frauds. The Sheriff’s Office receives various types of reports from victims. Some of the common ways people are “conned” is for repairs or maintenance that is needed because of a harsh winter, storm damage, or alleged years of neglect by the owner. Sometimes, victims are convinced they need to repair their roof, faucet, or that there is the need to install lightening rods. Sealants for your driveway or what appears to be cracks in your foundation also can be targeted.
Victims of the fraud report that the quality of the service or product provided is not of a “normal” quality standard. Sometimes work is done that is not necessary, or the work does more damage than repair the problem. Victims have also reported that they have paid for services and the job is never completed or the price goes up after the repairs have begun. Ensure that you receive detailed quotes and prices including all the company’s information documented on bid sheets.
Here are some suggestions to aid you or someone you care for to avoid becoming a victim of a home repair fraud: Do not have unsolicited work done on your residence. Implement the 1-2-3 rule. If someone wants to do work at your residence that was not solicited by you:
1. Wait one day to speak to family members.
2. Wait a second day to speak to friends and neighbors about it.
3. Wait a third day to see if they come back to push you to get the work performed.
During the 3 day “waiting” period, contact a local reputable company to obtain a price comparison. Company referrals may be found by contacting local chambers of commerce, better business bureaus, and talking to trusted friends and family for references.
If you or someone you know becomes a victim of home repair fraud or another scam, make a report with your local police or sheriff’s office immediately. Residents are also encouraged to contact police to report any suspicious activity. Early notification to law enforcement may prevent others to not become a victim.
