Record Temperatures Expected Across the Southland

It comes as no surprise that its hot out there. With record temperatures expected throughout most of the week across the southland, it’s important to know what to do to combat the heat.

  1. Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of fluids to avoid dehydration. Increase your normal water consumption during mid and afternoon hours. Signs of dehydration include dizziness, fatigue, headaches, muscle cramps, and increase thirst. If you exhibit any of these signs, move to a cool place and drink plenty of fluids. Seek immediate medical attention or call 9-1-1 if you experience disorientation, diminished judgment, pale and clammy skin, a rapid and weak pulse and shallow breathing. These could be symptoms of severe heat related illness and can be life threatening.
  2. Avoid strenuous exercise: Exercising during heat waves can be extremely dangerous. If exercising outdoors, limit your outdoor exercise to the early morning or evening when temperatures drop.
  3.  Turn off the lights: Lighting and appliances generate heat. If you aren’t using it, turn it off.
  4. Circulate the air: Open window and doors to circulate the air in your home. Ceiling and box fans can also assist with air movement.
  5. Find a cooling station near you: We have two designated cooling stations in Torrance.

  1. Never leave children or pets in a car: The temperature inside a vehicle can rise 10 to 20 degrees above the outside temperature in less than 10 minutes. Always remember to check the backseat before exiting and locking your vehicle.
  2. Be a good neighbor: Check-in on those that may need assistance. They might not always be able to call for help when they need it. For more heat related tips click the following link:
