Please join us as UCPD recognizes National Police Week at tomorrow's, 5/13, City Council Meeting

Please join us at 7 p.m.,Tuesday, May 13 at the City Council Chambers at 34009 Alvarado-Niles Road, Union City, for a special National Police Week ceremony.

Union City proclaims the week of May 11, 2014, through May 17, 2014, as National Police Week, and Thursday, May 15, 2014, as Peace Officers’ Memorial Day in the City of Union City. National Police Week pays special recognition to those law enforcement officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty for the safety and protection of others.

The members of the Union City Police Department play an essential role in safeguarding the rights and freedoms of the citizens of Union City. The City of Union City owes a debt of gratitude to Chief William M. Cann, who gave the ultimate sacrifice on June 11, 1974, when a sniper assailant fired shots into the church where Chief Cann was addressing a neighborhood group to create improved police relations in the community.

It is important that all persons of the Union City community know and understand the problems, duties and responsibilities of their police department, and that members of our police department recognize their duty to serve the people by safeguarding life and property, by protecting them against violence or disorder, and by protecting the innocent against deception and the weak against oppression or intimidation. The Union City Police Department has grown to be a modern and scientific law enforcement agency which unceasingly provides a vital public service.
