Fatal Fire at Cape Cod Village in Sunnyvale - Cause Under Investigation; Identities of Two Victims Unconfirmed

SUNNYVALE, Calif. – On Thursday, May 8, 2014 at approximately 1:58 a.m., Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety (DPS) personnel responded to the report of a structure fire at Cape Cod Village mobile home park at 1050 Borregas Ave. Upon arrival, fire personnel discovered heavy smoke and flames coming from a single story residence and patrol officers assisted an adult male out of the home. Fire personnel immediately called a 2nd alarm due to the potential for a rescue and the fire to spread to nearby residences. The fire was brought under control within twenty-five minutes but completely destroyed the residence.

Fire Cause Investigators responded to the scene and located two deceased victims, an adult male and female, during a search of the residence. The Medical Examiner’s Office has not yet confirmed their identities. Investigators also found one deceased pet cat; another remains missing. The surviving adult male is mentally disabled and is receiving care from the Red Cross and the County’s Social Services Agency. His statements indicate that the adult male victim ushered him out of the home and went back inside to rescue the adult female victim. The fire appears to have originated in the kitchen and may have been a cooking fire that burned out of control, but the exact cause remains under investigation.

The Santa Clara Fire Department provided mutual aid to backfill Sunnyvale Fire Station 2 during this event. This two-alarm fire used a total of 9 apparatus and 25 personnel during the firefighting operations.
