FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

On 05/06/2014 at approximately 6:44 AM, an officer from the Angels Camp Police Department was dispatched to a verbal argument between a male and female at a residence on Gold Cliff Road. The female had locked herself inside the residence and the male was standing outside. The male, 29 year old San Andreas resident, Michael Wilmshurst, was reported to have a knife in his hand and possibly be under the influence of narcotics.

When the officer arrived, Wilmshurst failed to comply with the officer’s orders, walked over to his vehicle, and drove away. The officer returned to his vehicle and began following Wilmshurst because he believed Wilmshurst was possibly driving under the influence of narcotics, may still be armed with a knife, and was a danger to the public.

Wilmshurst’s driving became erratic and he violated several traffic laws. The officer then activated his emergency lights and siren in an attempt to stop Wilmshurst.

Wilmshurst failed to yield to the officer and continued to drive erratically and violate multiple traffic laws.

Deputies from the Calaveras Sheriff’s Department and officers from the California Highway Patrol were requested to assist. Officers from the California Highway Patrol eventually took over the pursuit.

Wilmshurst stopped his vehicle on Hwy 49 near Carol Kennedy Drive where he was taken in to custody by the Angels Camp Police Department.

Wilmshurst was booked in to the Calaveras County Jail on charges related to evading a peace officer, resisting/obstructing a peace officer, and reckless driving.
