K-9 "Aerie" tracks two suspects through Baxter Bog

“Aerie” is a 2 ½ year old Belgian Malinois. He has only been with the department for a little over a year, but in that time he has shown himself to be an accomplished and highly effective member of the APD K-9 Unit. Just yesterday, Aerie reminded us of his skills during a complicated track that led officers through Baxter Bog in search for two male subjects suspected of vehicle theft.

In the early morning hours of Thursday, April 24, APD Officer Jensen was in the area of Baxter Rd and E. Northern Lights Blvd when he spotted a vehicle that had been reported stolen from an East Anchorage home the previous day. Awaiting backup, the officer followed the vehicle to the end of Tamir Ave, where the two occupants jumped out and fled on foot into the Baxter Bog trail system. Officer Brown and his K-9 partner Aerie arrived to assist in searching for the suspects and a perimeter around the surrounding area was established by other Mid-shift units.

With the help of Officer Jensen, Officer Brown and Aerie initiated a track into the trail system, heading across the bog through knee-deep water. A thin layer of ice covering the water added to the degree of difficulty. After sloshing through the bog for some time, the officers and Aerie located one of the subjects; he was identified as the passenger in the stolen vehicle and he was taken into custody. The officers and Aerie then continued their track through the bog in search for the second suspect, through trees and expanses of knee-deep swamp water. Several times the track went cold, but the officers maintained the search, recovering the suspect’s trail and following it out of the bog toward Tayshee Cir. The track then weaved through multiple residential properties before leading Aerie to the back yard of a home, where the second suspect was finally located hiding under the back deck. The suspect was identified as the driver of the stolen vehicle and taken into custody without further incident.

The driver in the case was charged with Vehicle Theft 1, while the passenger was charged with Criminal Mischief 3. The stolen vehicle was recovered, and the owner was contacted.

Thanks to their tenacity and skill, Officer Jensen, Officer Brown, and Aerie were able to navigate the swamp, successfully apprehending the suspects despite their efforts to get away. Great job Officer Jensen, Officer Brown, and Aerie!

A little more about K-9 “Aerie”: Born in Holland, Aerie was sponsored through the Dollars for Dogs program, and has been with APD since December, 2012. He loves tracking (it’s his favorite game) and his favorite treat is dog biscuits.
