On April 23, 2014 at 6:53 AM, officers were dispatched to a traffic collision in the 300 block of SE 10th. Responding officers found that a motor vehicle struck a pedestrian. Mart Joe Self, WM, 66 was crossing 10th Avenue, northbound, when he stepped in front of an eastbound 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee driven by L.G. McDowell, WM, 85 of Amarillo. Self died at the scene as a result of his injuries. Justice of the Peace Thomas Jones has ordered an autopsy. The incident is being investigated by the Traffic Investigation Squad of the Amarillo Police Department.
