In March 2014 officers from the Santa Barbara Police Department made 49 arrests for driving under the influence violations.  Numerous arrests are made each month when concerned citizens call 9-1-1 after witnessing possible DUI drivers.  The SBPD would like to thank the responsible citizens who take the time to call and report suspected drunk drivers.  The following is information on a few of last month’s cases.

3/1/14 at 7:28 p.m.: Fredrick Forrest Hendrix (age 59) was driving through the Ralph’s parking lot on De La Vina Street when he rear-ended another vehicle.  Hendrix contacted the other driver and exchanged information; however he did not have proof of valid insurance.  The victim was concerned and called 9-1-1.  Police arrived and located Hendrix driving several blocks away and conducted a traffic stop.  Hendrix displayed symptoms of intoxication and was investigated by Officer Kamin for DUI.  Hendrix initially stated that he had not consumed any alcohol, but later stated that he had two margaritas prior to driving.  Officer Kamin determined that Hendrix was too intoxicated to safely operate a motor vehicle and placed him under arrest for DUI.  Hendrix chose to provide a blood sample which registered his BAC at .20.  Hendrix was issued a citation for DUI and admitted into the Sobering Center.

3/2/14 at 8:15 p.m.: Alta Elizabeth Jerue (age 39) was involved in a traffic collision when she drove her vehicle into a residential yard, through a fence, and down a thirty-foot embankment.  The owner of the property called 9-1-1 to report the collision and firefighters and paramedics responded and medically evaluated both Jerue and her passenger.  Officer Rosenberg arrived and contacted Jerue who was displaying symptoms of intoxication.  She stated that she had not consumed any alcohol prior to driving.  However, due to her apparent level of intoxication and the fact that she was unable to complete many of the field sobriety tests, Officer Rosenberg determined that Jerue was unsafe to operate a motor vehicle and placed her under arrest.  Jerue chose to submit to a breath test which registered her BAC at .30 and .29.  Jerue was also found to be in possession of a small amount of marijuana.  She was issued a citation for DUI and possession of marijuana and admitted into the Sobering Center.

3/2/14 at 9:43 p.m.: Peter Christoffer King (age 41) was driving erratically and involved in a traffic collision when he drove up and onto a planter.  A citizen concerned about King’s erratic driving had been following King and called 9-1-1.  The citizen followed King onto the freeway and eventually into a retirement home parking lot, where he observed King get his vehicle stuck on the planter.  King was able to dislodge his vehicle and then left the scene.  Officers located King and conducted a traffic stop.  Officer Kamin conducted a DUI investigation where King stated he had only consumed “a few beers, that’s it.”  King appeared very intoxicated and was not able to complete the field sobriety tests.  He was arrested for DUI chose to submit to a breath test which registered his BAC at .30 and .29.  King was booked into County Jail for DUI.

3/6/14 at 4:37 p.m.: Francisco Franco Calixto (age 34) was in the area of 1400 San Andres Street pushing his vehicle out of the northbound lanes of traffic.  Officer Williams was on routine patrol when he observed Calixto pushing the car.  Officer Williams stopped to assist Calixto when Calixto suddenly ran from the scene while a woman nearby started yelling that Calixto had hit her vehicle.  Officer Williams pursued and caught Calixto several blocks away.  Calixto was transported to the Police Station where Officer Bruce conducted a DUI investigation.  Calixto stated that he had consumed two to three shots of tequila prior to driving, saying that he was forced by a friend to drink the shots.  He then admitted to colliding with another vehicle, and said he only ran from Officer Williams because he had been driving without a license.  Officer Bruce had Calixto perform several field sobriety tests and determined that he was too intoxicated to safely operate a motor vehicle.  She arrested him and he chose to submit to a breath test which registered his BAC at .24 and .25.  Calixto was booked into County Jail for DUI, hit-and-run, resisting or delaying an officer, and unlicensed driver.

3/15/14 at 11:00 p.m.: Tuan Van Truong (age 48) was involved in a collision when he rear-ended another vehicle while driving northbound on the 1800 block of State Street.  The passenger in the victim vehicle noticed that Truong appeared very intoxicated at the time of the collision, prompting the passenger to call 9-1-1.  Firefighters and paramedics arrived on scene and noted that the driver of the victim vehicle sustained injuries in the collision.  Officer Eccles and Officer Freeman arrived and contacted Truong.  Truong smelled strongly of alcohol and had bloodshot watery eyes and slurred speech.  He refused to answer any questions or participate in any field sobriety tests.  Based on his involvement in the collision and his level of intoxication, Truong was placed under arrest for DUI and transported to the Police Station.  Once there he was read the DUI chemical test admonishment and he chose to submit to a blood test.  He was transported to Goleta Valley Hospital where a blood sample was obtained which registered his BAC at .20.  Truong was booked into County Jail for DUI resulting in injury, a felony.

3/16/14 at 5:05 p.m.: Jessica Martinez (age 20) was involved in two hit-and-run collisions, one resulting in injury.  Concerned citizens had called 9-1-1 to report Martinez’s erratic driving and her vehicle was subsequently located and stopped near the intersection of Santa Rosa Avenue and Loyola Drive.  Officer Molina contacted Martinez and immediately noticed that she appeared very intoxicated.  Martinez stated that she had consumed three mixed drinks with vodka in them prior to driving.  Officer Molina observed that Martinez was too intoxicated to stand without assistance and also saw that she fell over several times while seated.  Martinez was too intoxicated to safely complete field sobriety tests and was placed under arrest for DUI.  Martinez chose to submit to a breath test which registered her BAC at .29 and .29.  She was also found to be in possession of marijuana.  Martinez was booked into County Jail for felony DUI causing injury, felony hit-and-run, and possession of marijuana.
