On Wednesday April 16, 2014 the Arcadia Police Department responded to an injury traffic collision at the intersection of Huntington Dr. and Gate 1.  The collision involved a vehicle and two pedestrians.  Unfortunately, one of the pedestrians died as a result of his injuries.  The other pedestrian sustained serious injuries.

In light of this incident, the Arcadia Police Department would like to remind pedestrians, as well as drivers, of several safety tips.

• Pedestrians should always use crosswalks, when available, and only cross when traffic is clear. 
• Even if the pedestrian crossing light says to "WALK," the pedestrian should check oncoming traffic to be sure it's clear.
• If there is not a crosswalk in the immediate area, pedestrians have the responsibility to cross when it is safe to do so, and must yield to oncoming traffic.
• Pedestrians may not cross between two intersections controlled by traffic signals, this is what is commonly referred to as "jaywalking."
• Pedestrians should attempt to make eye contact with drivers before entering an intersection, even while in the crosswalk.
• Never assume that drivers will stop or yield-walk defensively
• During the hours of darkness, pedestrians are encouraged to wear light colored or reflective clothing and carry some sort flashlight or other illuminated device.
• Drivers must yield the right of way to pedestrians lawfully within a crosswalk.
• Drivers approaching a crosswalk, even on a green light, should look for pedestrians. 
• Drivers should not pass a vehicle that is slowing down, or stopped at a crosswalk. 

These are just a few safety tips for drivers and pedestrians.  As a driver you should always be looking for bicyclists and pedestrians entering, crossing, and already within the roadway.  As pedestrians you should always be paying attention to traffic and only cross the roadway when safe to do so.
