Incident: Improving Pedestrian Safety and Distracted Driving are the aim of Petaluma Police Department Operation.

Summary:

The Petaluma Police Department conducted a special enforcement operation on Wednesday, April 16, 2014, aimed at improving pedestrian safety and distracted driving. This operation was conducted within the City of Petaluma. During this operation 2 citations were issued for pedestrian violations and 31 citations were issued for Distracted Driving violations.

Assisting traffic officers from the Petaluma Police Department in their education and enforcement efforts were traffic officers from the Santa Rosa Police Department, California Highway Patrol, Sebastopol Police Department and Rohnert Park DPS. There were a total of 18 motor officers that participated in this operation. This operation was part of the ongoing Combined Intensive Traffic Enforcement (C.I.T.E.) program established between several agencies within Sonoma County.

Operations like this are aimed at reducing distracted driving along with pedestrian and bicyclist collisions. The Petaluma Police Department is reminding all motorists to always be alert and watch out for pedestrians and bicyclists.

Distracted driving is a serious traffic safety concern that puts everyone on the road at risk. As a result, law enforcement across the state, including Petaluma are increasingly cracking down on cell phone use and texting. This April will see over 225 local agencies plus the 103 CHP Area Commands conducting zero tolerance enforcements.
