Suspect Arrested with Loaded Firearm at School Campus
On Monday 4-14-2014 at 1:10 PM, Pomona Police Dispatch received a call for service in the area of Alcott Elementary regarding a person acting erratically. He was also described as possibly being under the influence of drugs.
Officers arrived on scene and contacted Isaas Valencia (34 year old Pomona resident). He was standing to the front of the school with his two children, whom he had just checked out of the school early. Officers spoke with Valencia and noted he was acting erratically. The suspect's children were walked back into the school by an officer. At that time school staff told the officer that Valencia had left a loaded handgun on the office counter wrapped in a shirt.
Officers attempted to take Valencia into custody and a struggle ensued. Valencia fled the scene on foot with officers giving chase. Valencia was then seen taking live ammunition out of his pockets and throwing it to the ground as he ran from officers.
Valencia was taken into custody and charged with taking a loaded firearm onto a school campus and resisting arrest. The handgun and ammunition were recovered by officers and are also in custody.
This incident is a good example of a citizen calling the police when something seems out of place. If you see something, say something.
