Suspect on the run (Damion Gonzales) captured Monday evening and charged in multiple thefts and break-ins; girlfriend also charged

Investigators’ hunt for a suspect on the lam is over.
McDowell County sheriff’s deputies have been searching for Damion Lee Gonzales, 37, of Rolands Chapel Road in Nebo, for more than a week. An investigation led them to Bakersville Monday night, where they located and apprehended Gonzales.
He and his girlfriend, 30-year-old Gwendolyn Elaine Thompson, of Stockton Road in Marion, face the following charges for the following crimes:
-- On Jan. 15, Randy Myers, of South Creek Road in Nebo, reported that someone entered his residence and stole a computer, a TV and a video game controller and game with a total value of $1,400 and caused $350 worth of damage to a door.
Some of the property was recovered.
Detective Billie Brown charged Gonzales with one felony count each of breaking and entering and larceny and one misdemeanor count of damage to property.
-- On Feb. 20, Gary Weaver reported that someone broke into his Clear Creek Road residence and took six firearms, a laptop computer and an iPad worth $2,750.
Detective Andy Manis charged Gonzales with felony breaking and entering, felony larceny and misdemeanor damage to property. Manis also charged Thompson with felony possession of stolen goods.
-- Also on Feb. 20, Tommy Johnson, of Old Clear Creek Road in Marion, reported that someone entered his house and removed a TV, a microwave and a taxidermist-stuffed bobcat with a total value of $700 and caused $1,000 worth of damage to a door.
The stuffed bobcat was recovered.
Brown charged Gonzales with felony breaking and entering, felony larceny and misdemeanor damage to property. Thompson was charged with felony possession of stolen goods.
-- Debra Mace, of Lake Tahoma Road in Marion, reported on March 20 that someone broke into her residence and stole two TVS, a laptop computer and jewelry with a total value of $3,100.
The laptop and two rings were recovered.
Manis charged Gonzales with one felony count each of breaking and entering, larceny and possession of stolen goods. He also charged Thompson with felony possession of stolen goods.
-- Carson Gowan, of Lake Tahoma Road in Marion, reported on March 21 that someone took a 1998 Honda four-wheeler, worth $2,000, from his property.
The four-wheeler has been recovered.
Manis charged Gonzales with felony larceny and felony possession of stolen goods. Thompson was charged with felony possession of stolen goods.
-- On March 24, Chris Biddix, of N.C. 226 North in Marion, reported that someone removed a 1998 Honda four-wheeler, valued at $6,000, from an outbuilding on his property.
The ATV was recovered.
Brown charged Gonzales with felony larceny and Thompson with felony possession of stolen goods.
-- On April 9, William Stockton, of Stockton Road in Marion, reported that someone broke into his home and stole a $400 compound bow.
The bow was recovered.
Brown charged Gonzales with felony breaking and entering, felony larceny and misdemeanor damage to property. She also charged Thompson with one felony count each of breaking and entering, larceny and possession of stolen goods.
The detectives said the victims and suspects were not acquainted. These were random crimes.
Gonzales has also been charged with similar crimes in Yancey and Rutherford counties and Glen Alpine.
“We would like to thank all these agencies and the Mitchell County Sheriff’s Office for their assistance in the investigation,” said Capt. Shanon Smith. “It was a cooperative effort between all these departments.”
