Man Faces Multiple Charges in Child Neglect Investigation

A man faces multiple charges after police found his two young children unattended in an unlocked car with the motor running, and a gun and alcohol in the car.

Antonie Callhoun, 27, of Enville, was arraigned Friday morning in Jackson City Court for two counts of felony child neglect, unlawful possession of a firearm and violation of open container law.

Calhoun is free on $10,000 bond, and his next scheduled court appearance is May 8 at 9:30 a.m. in Jackson City Court.

Around 11:30 p.m. Thursday, officers were patrolling the parking lot of Wal-Mart, at 2171 S. Highland Ave. Officers saw a car parked in the fire lane with two young children in the back seat. Upon further inspection, officers noticed that the car's motor was running and the doors were unlocked.

The children were identified as siblings, ages 8 and 5. Officers learned that their father had gone inside Wal-Mart.

About five minutes later, Antonie Calhoun returned to his car. Further investigation determined that a loaded handgun was inside the car between the center console and driver's seat. There was also an open bottle of brandy between the center console and passenger's seat. The gun and alcohol were both within reach of the children.

Calhoun was arrested and transported to the Madison County Jail.

The children's mother was contacted, and the children and car were released to her.

Police referred this incident to the Tennessee Department of Children's Services.
