(HOUSTON, TX) - The Harris County Sheriff’s office is happy to inform the public that it is now accepting the ‘Matricula Consular’ as a valid form of identification for inmate visitation at the Harris County Jail.

The Matrícula Consular is an identification card issued by the Mexican government through its consulate offices to Mexican nationals residing outside of Mexico. It includes a Government of Mexico issued ID number and a photograph and address outside of Mexico of the Mexican National to whom it is issued.

“This is something I’ve been working on since becoming sheriff. It has taken a while to get here but we’re finally there.” said Sheriff Adrian Garcia. “Now thanks to our partnership with the Consulate General of Mexico in Houston we will now allow those with the matricula as their only valid form of ID to visit a loved one or friend in our jail.”

The HCSO is hoping to partner with other countries with similar forms of government-issued identification cards.

It is important to note that everyone visiting an inmate at the Harris County Jail, including those with a matricula consular, will be subjected to a background check before being granted access to the HCSO’s secure facilities.

Other forms of acceptable identification for jail visits include, but are not limited to:
• Any valid driver’s license or identification card issued from any U.S. state
• United States Passport
• Foreign passports with valid entry visa
• Resident alien card
• Naturalization certificate
• Employment authorization card
