Narrative:
National Volunteer Week is about inspiring, recognizing, and encouraging all people to come together in their communities for the common good, to meet challenges, and accomplish community goals. This year National Volunteer Week celebrates its 40th year recognizing our country's volunteers. National Volunteer Week was started by President Richard Nixon, who on April 20, 1974, declared the week dedicated to those who give their time to charity and others.
The Ventura County Sheriff’s Office recognizes its many volunteers this week. From the highly trained and skilled Dive Team and Mountain Team members of the Sheriff’s Search & Rescue, Sheriff’s Reserve Deputies, and local City Volunteers in Policing (VIP’s).
Moorpark currently has twenty dedicated VIP's. They are trained in first aid, CPR, traffic control, report writing, and administrative responsibilities to list some of their job duties. The VIP's are on call 24/7 to provide law enforcement support as well as assistance at many planned events within the City of Moorpark. The Moorpark Volunteers assist with many of the Moorpark events and functions including Moorpark Country Day, 3rd of July Fireworks, the Ground Hog 5K Run, Moorpark Arts Festival,”Roamin Relics” Car Show, to name a few.
During this week, we are thanking volunteers on a national, state and county wide basis as well as our local volunteers which give so much to our community every day. During 2013, our Moorpark Volunteers in Policing helped keep our community safe by volunteering 6,477 hours to public safety and law enforcement "We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give" - Winston Churchill
