Last night's accident at ABE and Pierce sends seven to the hospital.

On 4-8-14, at 9:51 PM, officers responded to a three car accident at the intersection of Amarillo Blvd and N. Pierce.  A white Honda four-door with three occupants was eastbound on Amarillo Boulevard, crossing Pierce, when a red Peterbuilt truck tractor pulling a load of hay entered the intersection southbound and struck the Honda.  The truck’s initial impact was on the Honda’s left front, but the car sustained heavy damage as it spun away and the truck continued south.  The truck then veered to the east, crossed the curb, and struck a Ford Explorer parked on the west side of the McDonald’s at 400 Amarillo Boulevard East.  The impact pushed the vehicle through the west wall of the building, and the truck also entered the building and rolled over on its side, coming to rest on the Explorer.  The female driver of the Explorer was removed from the car and taken to the hospital.  AFD personnel were able to extract the truck driver at about 11:45 PM.  He was taken to the hospital with non life-threatening injuries. The preliminary information on persons treated is that  a total of seven people went to the hospital by ambulance or private car, including the truck driver, Explorer driver, and five from the white Honda or from inside the building.  None are reported as suffering from life-threatening injuries.  The semi was pulled from the building at about 3:15 AM, the Explorer was taken out at about 4:00 AM.  APD supervisors on the scene said that the intersection was opened for traffic at about 4:15 AM.  APD Traffic Investigations Squad responded.  Investigators believe that a red light violation was the primary cause of the accident.  No citations have been issued pending additional investigation.
