Marijuana-Loaded Panga Boat Comes Ashore, Leo Carrillo State Beach, #LASD MLH Station

On Monday, April 7, 2014 at approximately 8:00 AM, deputies from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s (LASD) Malibu/Lost Hills Station responded to Leo Carrillo State Beach, unincorporated Malibu, regarding a call from State Park Rangers. State Park Rangers were asking for assistance in searching for occupants of a Panga boat that had come ashore, was leaking gasoline and smelled strongly of marijuana.

Deputies arrived at the location and observed the 30-foot vessel on the beach. State Park Rangers were detaining one suspect, and had determined there were two additional suspects who ran from the boat. A containment was established and a search initiated with additional assistance of the California Highway Patrol, the United States (U.S.) Coast Guard, the LASD Special Enforcement Bureau (SEB), Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), the multi-agency, Homeland Security Investigations (HIS)-led Border Enforcement Security Taskforce (BEST), and Los Angeles County Fire personnel to include Los Angeles County Life Guards.

The search resulted in the capture of two additional suspects and the Panga boat was found to be loaded with numerous bundles of marijuana.

The ensuing investigation will be handled by investigators of BEST. BEST members include personnel from ICE-HIS, the Los Angeles and Orange County Sheriff’s Departments, the Los Angeles Police Department, the Los Angeles Port Police, the U.S. Coast Guard, the Drug Enforcement Administration, and multiple divisions of the U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

The seized marijuana is being transported to a local HSI office to be weighed and processed as evidence and the Panga boat is in the process of being towed for evidence. The suspects are in the custody of BEST investigators for questioning.

Anyone with information about this incident is encouraged to contact Virginia Kice, ICE-HSI, BEST, at (949) 360-3096.
