INDOT Driver Injured in Two Vehicle Crash
Tippecanoe County-Today at approximately 1:31 p.m, on I-65 southbound near the 179 mile marker (that is one mile north of the SR 43 exit in Tippecanoe County), a semi failed to yield to a state highway truck sending the driver of the highway truck to the hospital.
Preliminary investigation by Trooper David Millburg has revealed that Ivica Aleksic, 39 years old from Schererville, IN was driving a red 2006 Freightliner for SNK Express pulling a 2009 Great Dane box trailer full of box fans. Aleksic was driving in the left lane for unknown reason pulled back into the right lane and struck the yellow 2000 Sterling dump tuck owned by the Indiana Department of Transportation and driven by Daryle E. Loveless, 58 years old from Lafayette, IN. The highway truck was pulling an attenuator which is a devise used to reduce impact from a rear collision to a state highway truck. There were several signs advising motorist of the right lane blockage and road repair occurring ahead. The arrow board on the attenuator was also in operational mode.
The Freightliner struck the attenuator destroying it and causing damage to the highway truck and injuring the driver. The Freightliner went into the median where it got tangled in the cable barriers. It took approximately one hour to clear the roadway, investigation of the crash and transporting of the injured.
Loveless was transported to IU Health Arnett Hospital in Lafayette with non-life threatening injuries. Aleksic was issued a citation for failure to move over for emergency vehicles. Both drivers were wearing their seatbelts at the time of the crash. Assisting at the scene were Tippecanoe County Sheriff’s Department, Tippecanoe County EMT’s, INDOT and Troopers from the Lafayette Post.
