Experience a Key Component for the City of Maricopa Fire Department

In the arena of firefighting, textbook knowledge will only take you so far. Real world experience can truly mean the difference between life and death for citizens and firefighters. For this reason, the Maricopa Fire Department has made the acquisition of smart, competent, and seasoned leaders of vital importance.

Battalion Chief Gibby Gorman was hired December 9th, 2013 after successfully completing a highly competitive testing and interview process. Key to his success in the process was Chief Gorman’s vast experience in the fire service. After a 26 year career with the Tempe Fire, Medical, and Rescue Department Gibby Gorman retired in August of 2012. During his career in Tempe Chief Gorman held a number of influential positions within the organization including firefighter, captain, recruit training officer, hazardous materials technician, technical rescue team member, technical rescue instructor, east valley technical rescue coordinator, s.c.u.b.a. dive team member, as well as a leader within the Tempe Fire, Medical, and Rescue department’s ladder apparatus operations training program and the east valley ladder operations training program.

Always driven to pass his experiences on to others in the fire service, Chief Gorman began teaching at Mesa Community College in 1997. As an instructor, he taught the Firefighter I and Firefighter II programs at M.C.C. as well as holding the position of state fire school instructor. Chief Gorman’s knowledge base has also been shared and studied nationwide as he is the author of numerous articles in national fire magazines, presented at the World Firehouse Symposium, and established a consulting firm that focuses on ladder operations.

Chief Gorman is very excited to join and help the Maricopa Fire Department provide the highest level of service possible to the community and offer leadership to the firefighters, along with other senior staff members in a department that is on the fast track to growth and success. Chief Gorman will use relationships he has built with other valley fire departments to create training and teaching opportunities for members of the Maricopa Fire Department. These opportunities will prove to further the quality and efficiency of service delivery to the citizens of Maricopa.

Chief Gorman has been married to his wife, Andi, for 7 years. They both love to travel, backpack, hike, and compete in triathlons and half-marathons. They recently completed a 52 mile, 5-day hike to the summit of Mt. Whitney, the highest peak in the lower 48 states.
