On Friday, March 28th, at about 7:00 AM, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, Transit Services Bureau (TSB) Deputies working at Los Angeles Union Station, were summoned by an astute Security Ambassador making his rounds, of a man attempting to hang himself in the bathroom at the location. Union Station Lobby Ambassador, Edgar Hernandez (pictured), a 5 year veteran of the Union Station Security Force, was flagged down by a patron stating something did not seem right in the men’s restroom at the east portal area. When he saw what appeared to be a man hanging from one of the stalls, he radioed for assistance.
LASD TSB Threat Interdiction Team Deputies Jason Ely, and Jamey Burklow (pictured), were near the restroom, and were waived over by Hernandez. When they arrived they found a male, Hispanic, approximately 35 years old, hanging by the neck, from what appeared to be his shoe laces. Deputies Ely and Burklow immediately cut the man down and called for fire/paramedics. Deputy Ely, who is a trained Emergency Medical Technician, noticed that the man was unconscious and not breathing, but had a faint pulse. Ely and Burklow put the man in a position to begin CPR, when he suddenly gasped and began to breathe on his own.
Deputies searched the stall where he was found, and noticed what appeared to be a suicide note. Los Angeles City Fire Rescue #2 responded and transported the unidentified man to LAC/USC Medical Center for treatment. He was later placed on a 72 hour hold for psychiatric evaluation, due to the apparent attempt on his own life.
Sheriff’s Transit Services Bureau and the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority want to remind everyone that you’re not alone. There are people who care.
