Downtown Airport Road to close Wednesday for four days

In its continued effort to upgrade facilities and infrastructure at Charles B. Wheeler Downtown Airport, the Kansas City Aviation Department is constructing an Aircraft Rescue & Fire Fighting vehicle storage and training facility at 410 Richards Road. This construction necessitates the temporary closure of a portion of Richards Road, the eastern portion of the loop road around the airport. The closure could affect airport tenants and commuters who attempt to use Richards Road as a traffic by-pass during morning rush hour.

To make the water main connection in the street for the new station the southbound lane of Richards Road will be closed between 250 and 440 Richards Road for approximately four days beginning Wednesday, April 2 at 7 a.m. For the duration of this work, the middle airport exit on southbound 169 and the southbound 169 on-ramp at 400 Richards Road will be barricaded closed. The north and south airport exits and south airport entrance will remain open.

Current plans are to leave the northbound lane of Richards Road open to through traffic; however, it is possible that the required excavation may result in the complete closure of Richards Road at this location on April 2 for the duration of this work estimated at about 4 days.

Drivers should closely observe traffic control devices to avoid mishaps or delays. Due to safety concerns, the Aviation Department advises against biking and jogging at the airport during this street closure.

The Kansas City Airport System is an Enterprise Fund Department of the City of Kansas City, Mo., and is supported wholly by airport user charges.
