Police Extradite Fugitive who Cuts off Ankle Monitor, Flees to Hawaii

Case: 14-12831

On Saturday, March 29, 2014 just after 11:30 a.m. APD received a report of a fugitive, identified as 32-year-old Joshua Leigh, who had cut off his ankle monitor at a local hardware store and left the state on a flight to Hawaii. Leigh was awaiting trial on felony charges.

It was reported to police by a monitoring agency that Leigh entered a local hardware store just before 9:00 a.m., used a tool in the store to cut off his ankle monitor and left the store.

While conducting a preliminary investigation to determine Leigh’s whereabouts, it was determined that Leigh had boarded a flight to Maui shortly after the ankle monitor was cut off. Anchorage police obtaind an extraditable warrant and Maui police detained Leigh at the airport in Hawaii when the plane landed. Leigh was extradited back to Anchorage and was charged with Violation of Condition of Release and Criminal Mischief in the third degree. APD would like to acknowledge the cooperative effort between Airport police, Maui police, Alaska Pretrial Services and the District Attorney’s office to quickly extradite and detain Leigh.
