Advisory

Scam alert: Callers representing themselves as IRS agents telling people they owe back taxes.

People have reported receiving calls from males with a heavy accent identifying themselves as representatives of various government agencies. In one incident they advised they were from the federal criminal division and told the person that they owed money from an unpaid payday loan and there is a warrant out for their arrest. One victim sent out $1300 through GreenDot money cards.

Today a female received a call from a male who said he was from the IRS and he said she owed money from back taxes and if she didn’t pay $1200 he was going to have males at her door to arrest her. This time she called police before sending out any money.

The callers tend to be aggressive and intimidating in hopes of flustering the intended victim into complying with their demand for money. These calls can be generated from anywhere, even outside the United States. Don't fall for this.

Government agencies will never advise you to wire them money through Western Union or through the use of these prepaid cards like Green Dot.

If you have doubts if an actual government agency is trying to contact you, locate the public contact number for that agency and call them yourself.
